Jamie Steane is an Associate Professor in Interaction Design at Northumbria University. He holds a BA (Hons), MEd, PGCert, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). His academic work bridges design, technology, and business, with a focus on user experience, emerging technologies, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Steane has extensive industry experience as a digital design professional and creative director for companies like Philips, Time-Warner, and WPP. He has authored books such as The Principles and Processes of Interactive Design and Interaction Design from Concept to Completion, both translated into Mandarin and Spanish.
His research includes projects like TAPESTRY (EPSRC-funded blockchain trust framework) and patient communication systems for healthcare institutions. He has led high-profile industry collaborations with Microsoft Research, Orange, Sainsbury’s, and agencies like Digitas and Ustwo. Steane also co-founded the Graphic Design Educators Network (GDEN), organizing conferences and symposiums to advance design education.
He has pioneered innovative teaching methods, including multi-disciplinary live projects and the iPole initiative for international collaborative learning. His work emphasizes flexible learning models and the integration of real-world industry challenges into curricula.
