Jamie S McPhee

Professor Jamie S McPhee is the Faculty Director of Research for Science and Engineering and a Professor of Musculoskeletal Physiology at Manchester Metropolitan University. His research focuses on exercise interventions for muscle health, sarcopenia, and muscle wasting disorders. He holds leadership roles in academic research strategy and serves on the European College of Sport Sciences' Scientific Review Panel. McPhee completed his PhD in Muscle and Exercise Physiology at Manchester Metropolitan University and a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Birmingham.

Research Interests: His work employs advanced techniques like 3T MRI, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and electromyography to study muscle aging, disuse atrophy, and neuromuscular function. Current projects include cancer prehabilitation, fibromyalgia mechanisms, and novel nutritional interventions for muscle preservation. Collaborations span 14 UK universities through his prior role at the University Alliance Doctoral Training Alliance.

Grants & Projects: Ongoing studies include NW Cancer Research-funded projects on oesophageal cancer prehabilitation and EU-funded MYOAGE research on muscle aging. He supervises PhD students in exercise physiology and musculoskeletal health, offering guidance on securing research funding.

Labs & Teams: Leads a multidisciplinary research team at the Institute of Sport, using state-of-the-art facilities for muscle imaging and molecular biology. Expanding team invites early-career researchers in neuromuscular physiology and clinical exercise science.
