Jamie Patrick Near is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University, based at the Centre d'Imagerie Cérébrale at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute in Montreal.
Dr. Near's educational background includes:
- Undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics from Queen's University (2004)
- PhD in Medical Biophysics from University of Western Ontario's Robarts Research Institute
- Postdoctoral training at the University of Oxford, UK
Dr. Near's research focuses on the development and implementation of advanced magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) techniques for accurate quantification of metabolite concentrations in the human brain. His laboratory specializes in MRI pulse sequence programming, data processing and analysis, radiofrequency coil development, and quantum mechanical simulation of MRS experiments. His work provides unique insights into the neurochemical aspects of both healthy brain function and disease states including neurotransmitters like GABA, glutamate & glutamine. Dr. Near collaborates closely with neuroscientists and clinicians to investigate functional and neurochemical aspects of the brain using MRI and MRS technologies.
Dr. Near returned to Canada in 2012 to join McGill University's Department of Psychiatry as an Assistant Professor, bringing expertise developed through his doctoral work on imaging techniques for prostate cancer investigations and postdoctoral research on MRS methods for neurotransmitter measurement with psychiatric applications.
