Prof. (apl.) Gabriele Ende is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Neuroimaging within the Medical Faculty Mannheim at Heidelberg University. Her primary affiliation is with the Central Institute of Mental Health (Zentralinstitut für Seelische Gesundheit) in Mannheim. She specializes in translational neuroimaging research, focusing on developing multimodal imaging biomarkers for psychiatric diseases. Her work integrates neurochemistry, functional MRI, and spectroscopy to understand the relationship between neural activity, neurotransmitter concentrations (e.g., GABA and glutamate), and clinical symptoms in conditions like Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and alcohol addiction.
Research interests include:
- Development of neuroimaging methods (e.g., hyperscanning, awake-state fMRI in animals)
- Neurochemical correlates of impulsivity and pain processing in BPD
- Translational studies using rodent models to bridge human and animal research
- Neurofeedback interventions targeting amygdala activity and prefrontal-limbic connectivity
Her lab utilizes cutting-edge facilities, including 3T MRI scanners (with multinuclear capabilities) and a 9.4T animal scanner. Recent projects emphasize the role of GABA and glutamate in brain connectivity, particularly in the fronto-striatal network and ACC-caudate pathways.
Key collaborations involve interdisciplinary teams at the Central Institute of Mental Health and Heidelberg University. Her research aims to identify imaging endophenotypes to accelerate drug development for psychiatric disorders.
