Professor Jamie Highton is a Professor of Applied Sports Physiology at the University of Chester, affiliated with the Division of Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing and the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Society. He leads exercise physiology programs across undergraduate and postgraduate levels, coordinates research activities for the Research Excellence Framework submission, and serves as the pathway leader for the MSc Sports Performance Science. He holds a BSc and PhD in Sport and Exercise Sciences from the University of Chester.
Research interests include the physiology of team sports (particularly rugby), training load management, recovery strategies, and quantitative research methods. Recent work focuses on HIIT protocols, match official demands, and supplementation effects on performance. Over 60 peer-reviewed publications span topics like neuromuscular responses, GNSS data quality, and recovery modalities.
His scientific achievements include an HEA Fellowship (Advance HE). He supervises graduate work on topics like insect protein in sports and rugby injury prevention. Active on committees such as the Faculty Research and Innovation Sub-Committee, he also serves as an external examiner for multiple universities. His work integrates applied sport science with evidence-based practice, emphasizing practical applications in elite performance settings.
Labs/Teams: Core contributor to the Health and Wellbeing Research and Knowledge Exchange Institute at the University of Chester. Collaborates with professional rugby teams and international sports organizations.
