Dr. Stephen Patterson is a Professor in Applied Exercise Physiology & Performance at St Mary's University, where he also serves as Director of the Centre for Applied Performance Sciences and Course Lead for the Professional Doctorate in Strength and Conditioning. He holds a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from Napier University (2005), an MSc from Strathclyde University (2006), and a PhD from Loughborough University (specializing in blood flow restriction training). His research focuses on two main areas: Health and Sports Performance, with a particular emphasis on blood flow restriction (BFR) training for rehabilitation and performance, ischemic preconditioning, and team sports physiology.
Dr. Patterson has supervised numerous PhD students across institutions like St Mary’s University, Surrey University, and Liverpool Hope University, with topics ranging from BFR in clinical populations to rugby player performance analysis. He has authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications, contributing to areas such as BFR safety, ACL rehabilitation, and neuromuscular adaptations.
