Professor Jamie Abaied serves as Chair of the Department of Psychological Science at the University of Vermont (UVM). Her work bridges developmental psychology, racial socialization, and family dynamics. She leads the UVM Family Development Lab, focusing on how parents navigate challenging topics like racism, stress management, and the transition to emerging adulthood (ages 18-27). Her research emphasizes the role of biological factors like autonomic stress reactivity in parenting processes.
Education includes a B.A. from Hamilton College (2004), M.A. (2007), and Ph.D. (2010) in Clinical Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her career has centered on advancing understanding of racial equity in parenting and coping strategies across developmental stages.
Key research areas include White racial socialization, parent socialization of coping, and parental roles in emerging adulthood. Collaborations, such as with Dr. Sylvia Perry (Northwestern University), explore how white parents shape children’s racial attitudes. Recent work highlights interventions to reduce racial biases through structured parent-child dialogues.
Publications span 2008–2024, with a focus on racial socialization, coping mechanisms, and biological moderators of developmental outcomes. Her contributions address systemic inequities in child development and advocate for evidence-based strategies in white families’ race conversations.
