Professor James Wallman is the Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He previously served as Head of the School of Life Sciences at UTS and held leadership roles in the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health at the University of Wollongong. A renowned entomologist, he specializes in forensic entomology, particularly the biology of flies and their applications in criminal investigations. His work spans over 30 years, contributing to casework for Australian police jurisdictions.
James holds a PhD and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the University of Adelaide. His research focuses on carrion-breeding flies, forensic entomology, and insect biodiversity. He has published extensively in top journals and enhanced public understanding through media appearances and documentaries.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, the Royal Entomological Society, and the Royal Society of New South Wales. His awards include an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for his contributions to student learning in entomology.
James’ research emphasizes decomposition studies, insect succession patterns, and the integration of genomics with forensic entomology. His work bridges ecological studies and criminalistics, advancing methodologies for estimating time since death and improving forensic evidence analysis.
