James Walker is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Humanities, School of Social Sciences at Nottingham Trent University. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate Humanities courses with a focus on digital humanities, civic engagement, and employability, while contributing to course development, assessment, and academic management.
His research centers on digital storytelling and digital literary criticism, specializing in Nottingham's literary heritage through multi-collaborative projects. Key initiatives include "Dawn of the Unread" (an award-winning graphic novel addressing literacy crises), "The Sillitoe Trail" (a multimedia exploration of Alan Sillitoe's work), and "D.H. Lawrence: A Digital Pilgrimage" (a traveling memory theatre retracing Lawrence's exile). These projects integrate student co-creation and public engagement with literary heritage.
Walker's publications span academic articles, short fiction, and digital projects, revealing consistent interdisciplinary trends: digital literary criticism bridges traditional scholarship with innovative media formats, while recurring themes of identity, social issues, and Nottingham's cultural landscape permeate both his creative writing and academic work. His research demonstrates the evolving relationship between digital platforms and literary expression.
His scientific awards include:
- Teaching Excellence Award, Guardian Education Awards (2015) for Dawn of the Unread
- Jo Cowell International Short Story Contest Winner (2003)
Walker has created over 120 student placements through Dawn of the Unread and teaches alternative dissertation modules that foster student collaboration in digital heritage projects. His research receives support from Arts Council England and Think Amigo, with grants enabling community-engaged literary initiatives.
He collaborates extensively with literary organizations including the D.H. Lawrence Society (developing Breach House into a cultural heritage space and digitizing archives) and co-organizes the East Midlands Heritage Awards, actively promoting Nottingham's literary history through institutional partnerships.
