James W. Mandell is a Professor in the Division of Neuropathology at the Department of Pathology, University of Virginia. He serves as a member of the Neuroscience Graduate Program and Associate Director for Curriculum in the Medical Scientist Training Program. His clinical expertise includes surgical and autopsy diagnostic neuropathology, with a focus on neuromuscular and ophthalmic pathology.

Dr. Mandell's research program centers on biomarker discovery for synaptic degeneration and inflammatory myopathies (e.g., inclusion body myositis), utilizing proteomics and noncoding RNA analysis. He developed a multiplex immunohistochemistry platform (patent pending) for anatomic pathology applications.
His recent publications demonstrate interdisciplinary contributions to CNS lymphatic biology, axonal degeneration mechanisms, and macroglial clearance functions. Collaborative work spans neuro-oncology, neuroimmunology, and diagnostic pathology.
