Andrew L. Folpe

Dr. Andrew L. Folpe is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He serves as Co-Chair of the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center Sarcoma Disease Group and co-Director of the Mayo Clinic Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology Fellowship. Dr. Folpe is also the Bone and Soft Tissue Associate Editor of Modern Pathology and serves on editorial boards of numerous pathology and dermatopathology journals.

Dr. Folpe completed his medical education at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (1994), followed by residency and fellowship training in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Washington Medical Center. He received additional specialized training in Immunohistochemistry under Dr. Allen Gown and in Soft Tissue Pathology under Dr. Sharon Weiss.

With expertise in soft tissue and bone pathology, Dr. Folpe's research focuses on the classification, diagnosis, and molecular characteristics of soft tissue tumors and sarcomas. His work has significantly contributed to the understanding of tumor genetics, immunohistochemical markers, and the development of diagnostic criteria for various soft tissue neoplasms. Dr. Folpe has published extensively on topics including soft tissue tumors, bone pathology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular diagnostics, with over 250 medical publications to his name.

His recent research has centered on molecular characterization of soft tissue tumors, with particular emphasis on gene fusions, tumor classification systems, and the development of diagnostic markers. Dr. Folpe has been instrumental in updating classification systems for soft tissue tumors, including contributions to the World Health Organization classification of tumors.
