James Taylor is a Lecturer at the Language Centre within the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film at Queen Mary University of London. He joined Queen Mary in 2002, where he teaches and designs materials for insessional and presessional courses. His pedagogical focus includes leveraging contrastive rhetoric and insights from corpus linguistics to help students practice the language and moves of academic writers.
Research Interests: James specializes in contrastive rhetoric and corpus linguistics. His work emphasizes integrating these fields into academic writing instruction, enabling students to develop discipline-specific communication skills. He has contributed to projects that explore how corpus-based analyses can enhance language learning and teaching methodologies.
Professional Experience: Beginning his teaching career in Egypt in 1989, James has taught globally across diverse educational contexts. He has worked on education projects for NGOs in Indonesia and Cambodia, the British Council in Taiwan, and the British School in Italy. His international experience also includes teaching roles in Turkey, Tanzania, Thailand, and London-based universities such as SOAS and UCL.
Examiner Roles: James has been an IELTS examiner since 1999 and also examines for Trinity College London, reflecting his expertise in language assessment and teaching standards.
