James Street is a Research Fellow at Northumbria University, specializing in linguistic research with a focus on cognitive grammar and usage-based approaches to language acquisition. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Sheffield (2009) and has extensive teaching experience in ESOL/EFL across multiple countries. His research explores individual differences in linguistic knowledge related to education and literacy, as well as syntactic processing in both native and non-native speakers of English.
Education:
- Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Sociology, University of Sheffield (1999)
- Trinity (Cambridge) Cert. TESOL (1999)
- Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics, University of Sheffield (2004, distinction)
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Linguistics, University of Sheffield (2009)
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA, 2012)
Research Focus: Dr. Street’s work investigates cognitive mechanisms underlying language processing, particularly in passive voice constructions and complex syntactic structures. He examines how factors like literacy, education, and individual variability influence comprehension and syntactic interpretation in both monolingual and bilingual populations.
Supervision: He currently supervises Kinga Patterson, whose research explores individual differences in processing complex noun phrases among native English speakers.
