His research spans SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis, autophagy in viral infections, mucosal immunity, and vaccine development, utilizing advanced molecular techniques and animal models.
- Developed K18-hACE2, hamster, and rat models for studying SARS-CoV-2
- Pioneered murine gammaherpesvirus models for host-virus interaction analysis
- Led international collaborations with institutions in China, USA, and Egypt
His scholarly contributions include Royal Society University Research Fellowship and a Royal Society of Chemistry Horizon Prize (2022). With over 40 PhD students mentored and extensive grant funding from MRC, Wellcome Trust, and BBSRC, he bridges academic research with translational medicine.
