Professor James Sleigh has taught viola at the Royal Academy of Music since 2002, bringing extensive performance experience to his pedagogy. Previously, he taught at Birmingham Conservatoire, Eton College, and St Paul's Girls' School.
As an orchestral musician, he served as principal viola with the Manchester Camerata, Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, and Scottish Chamber Orchestra (6 years). He collaborated with artists including Isaac Stern, Mstislav Rostropovich, Paul Tortelier, and Jean Francaix.
His teaching integrates performance expertise across solo, chamber, and orchestral contexts, emphasizing technical foundations and musical expression. He is an active chamber music coach, orchestral trainer, examiner, and adjudicator.
