Dr James Scobie is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath. He is affiliated with the IAAPS and the Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems (SES), contributing to advanced research in gas turbine cooling and turbomachinery systems. Scobie holds a MEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in experimental gas turbine fluid dynamics from the University of Bath, followed by a Post-doctoral Research Associate role and a Prize Fellowship (2015). He previously worked at Rolls-Royce plc.
His research focuses on optimizing gas turbine secondary air systems, particularly experimental modeling of hot-gas ingestion through turbine rim seals, fluid dynamics of rotating flow systems, novel shaft sealing technologies, and interactions between sealing and mainstream flows. He is actively involved in supervising doctoral students in fluid dynamics, gas turbine technologies, internal air systems, and thermal imaging techniques.
Key research contributions include developing ingress wave models, analyzing purge-mainstream density ratios, and advancing brush seal dynamics. His work employs combined experimental and computational methods, including turbulence-resolved modeling and volumetric velocimetry. Recent studies emphasize rotor dynamics, unsteady flow phenomena, and thermal management in rotating compressor/turbine cavities.
- Recipient of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Gas Turbine Award 2023 (2025)
- Won Best Paper Awards at the ASME Turbo Expo Technical Conference in both 2024 and 2023
Active in grants and contracts, he leads Innovate UK-funded projects (KTP collaborations with Cross Manufacturing and Modini Limited) and coordinates EPSRC-funded initiatives like the IAA – Effect of Density on Hot Gas Ingestion (2021–2022). His research also extends to EU Horizon 2020 projects involving advanced additive manufacturing for turbine cavities.
He collaborates with industry partners such as Siemens and Rolls-Royce, leveraging datasets from EPSRC-funded programs. Scobie’s expertise is further showcased through his supervision of the Turbomachinery Research Centre and contributions to thermal profiling of cooled radial turbines, adaptive seal technologies, and aeroengine cooling system optimization.
