James Sauls is the Hearne Chair of Theoretical Physics at Louisiana State University (LSU), holding a courtesy appointment at Northwestern University. He earned his BSc from Colorado School of Mines (1975) and PhD from SUNY Stony Brook (1980). Previously, he served as Sarah Rebecca Roland Professor at Northwestern (1991–2022) and held faculty positions at Princeton University and international institutions. His research focuses on theoretical condensed matter physics, quantum field theory, and superconductivity, with applications to quantum computing and dark matter detection.
- Education: BSc (Engineering Physics, 1975), PhD (Physics, 1980)
- Affiliations: Co-Director of the Horace Hearne Institute of Theoretical Physics, LSU; Principal Investigator in DOE’s SQMS Center
- Research: Superconductivity, quantum fluids, topological phases, and quantum materials
- Awards: Fritz London Prize (2017), John Bardeen Prize (2012), Max Planck Prize (1994)
Key contributions include theory of chiral superfluids, quantum phase transitions, and superconducting RF cavities. Teaches advanced courses in quantum field theory and statistical mechanics. Advises graduate students and postdocs in interdisciplinary quantum research.
