James S. Levine is an Associate Professor of Russian at George Mason University, affiliated with the Russian and Eurasian Studies Program. He holds degrees in history, Russian, and Slavic Linguistics from SUNY Buffalo and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has been a faculty member at GMU since 1981 after serving as Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park.

His research focuses on Russian language and linguistics, with emphasis on grammatical categories such as case, voice, aspect, and verbal reflexives. He has contributed to foundational texts like Schaum’s Outline of Russian Grammar and edited several Russian readers. His recent publications (2025-2015) span topics in psychology, including self-efficacy, psychopathology, and well-being, suggesting interdisciplinary interests.
Dr. Levine has served as a consultant for foreign language education projects and as a specialist reviewer for organizations such as the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Security Education Program.
