James S. Bethea is an Associate Professor of Counselor Education and Coordinator of the Mental Health Counseling Program at St. John’s University’s Human Services and Counseling Department within the School of Education. He holds a PhD in Rehabilitation Counselor Education from the University of Iowa, an MS in Rehabilitation Counseling from Boston University, and a BS in Recreation and Leisure Studies from Mount Olive College. Additionally, he serves as a Research Fellow at the Vincentian Center for Church and Society.

His research focuses on resilient behavior in minority youth, mentoring, substance abuse among individuals with disabilities, counselor spirituality integration, online learning’s impact on counseling, and family dynamics of children with Autism spectrum conditions. He teaches courses such as Psychosocial Development, Career Development, and Counseling the Substance Abuser.
Dr. Bethea’s professional experience spans private rehabilitation, school counseling, and mental health advocacy. His work emphasizes serving marginalized populations and enhancing counselor preparedness in diverse clinical contexts.
