James Russell Gordley

James Russell Gordley is the W.R. Irby Distinguished University Professor at Tulane Law School, where he has taught since 2007. Previously, he was a law faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1978 to 2007. He holds a JD from Harvard Law School (1970), an MBA from the University of Chicago (1968), and a BA from the same institution (1967). His research focuses on comparative law, contract law, legal history, and medieval canon law. He has been a visiting professor at numerous institutions, including the Universities of Fribourg, Munich, and Milan, and a fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Law in Hamburg. Gordley has received prestigious awards such as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences fellowship and the Tulane Law School’s Felix Frankfurter Distinguished Teaching Award (2010).

His scholarly contributions include books like Foundations of Private Law and The Philosophical Origins of Modern Contract Doctrine, and he has authored over 150 articles on topics ranging from Roman legal history to modern contract theory. He has held visiting scholar positions worldwide and is a member of esteemed academies, including the British Academy and the International Academy of Comparative Law.

Gordley’s teaching and research emphasize the historical and philosophical foundations of law, particularly the interplay between natural law and modern legal systems. His work bridges civil law and common law traditions, with a focus on European legal heritage and comparative methodology.
