James R. Doyle is a Professor and Chair of the Physics & Astronomy Department at Macalester College, where he has taught since 1992. He is based in the Olin-Rice Science Center (Room 131) and can be contacted at doyle@macalester.edu.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Physics from JILA at the University of Colorado at Boulder (1989) and a post-doctoral position in Materials Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (1989-1992):
- Ph.D. Physics, University of Colorado Boulder (1989)
- Postdoc, Materials Science, University of Illinois (1989-1992)
Professor Doyle's research spans interdisciplinary domains at the chemistry-physics interface. His primary areas include:
- Materials Science (thin-film photovoltaics, electrodeposition)
- Plasma Physics & Chemistry (glow discharge kinetics, plasma diagnostics)
- Computational Physics (grid modeling, transport simulations)
- Renewable Energy Systems (grid integration, storage solutions)
- Biophysics (neuron action potentials, ecological modeling)
His recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory toward sustainable energy applications and advanced materials characterization, with increasing emphasis on computational modeling of renewable grid integration and plasma-assisted deposition processes.
Professor Doyle actively mentors undergraduate researchers, evidenced by student co-authorships on publications in Renewable Energy and Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology. His teaching portfolio spans the entire physics curriculum with specialty courses in renewable energy and biophysics.
