James Quinlan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Southern Maine, joining in August 2023. He holds a PhD in Computational Science from the University of Southern Mississippi and a PhD in Mathematics Education from Ohio State University, alongside an MS in Mathematics from Youngstown State University and a BS in Mathematics from Ohio State University.
His research focuses on numerical linear algebra for high-performance computing, emphasizing the design and implementation of algorithms using low-precision arithmetic to solve systems of linear equations. He also contributes to deep learning and algorithm optimization. Dr. Quinlan has been recognized with the 2023 Distinguished University Teaching Award from the MAA Northeastern Section and was nominated for the prestigious Haimo Awards for Distinguished Teaching.
Dr. Quinlan's recent publications include advancements in sparse linear solvers and mixed-precision arithmetic systems, as well as educational research in calculus pedagogy. He has led efforts to develop data science programs and online curricula, including a nationally recognized graduate program at the University of Rhode Island. His work extends to software development, including the Universal Numbers Library, a multi-format arithmetic tool.
He currently serves as co-editor of the North American GeoGebra Journal and oversees the TEA Journal Project exploring AI in mathematics education. Grant funding includes NSF awards totaling over $2 million for initiatives like the M-ASCII program to support STEM education.
