James Pitts is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Utah State University's College of Science. His research focuses on the systematics, biogeography, and evolutionary biology of Hymenoptera, particularly velvet ants (Mutillidae) and spider wasps (Pompilidae). He has published extensively on taxonomic revisions, behavioral ecology, and molecular phylogenetics.
- PhD in Entomology, University of Georgia, 2002
- BS in Chemistry, University of Tennessee, 1995
- BS in Physics, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, 1995
His work includes Müllerian mimicry in desert velvet ants, phylogenetic analysis of Pompilidae subfamilies, and desert biogeography studies. Recent publications examine host-parasitoid dynamics, nocturnal wasp behavior, and cross-continental species diversification.
Scientific awards include Faculty Researcher of the Year (College of Science, 2011; Department of Biology, 2011). He has mentored 10 graduate students and teaches courses in biogeography, genetics, evolution, and entomology while leading habitat restoration research projects.
