James Parker is an Associate Professor and Director of the research program on Law, Sound and the International at Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne. His work explores intersections between law, sound, and listening, focusing on international criminal law, weaponized sound, and forensic listening. He holds a prestigious academic role, supervising doctoral students and teaching across evidence, criminal law, and legal theory.
Research & Awards
His landmark monograph Acoustic Jurisprudence (OUP 2015) won the Penny Pether Prize. He has researched the weaponization of sound (e.g., LRAD devices) and sonic jurisprudence, with publications in top legal and interdisciplinary journals. His work bridges law, art, and technology, including curation of the Eavesdropping exhibition on sound politics.
