James Owen Weatherall is a Chancellor’s Professor at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), with a primary appointment in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science and a courtesy appointment in Mathematics. He serves as Department Chair for Logic and Philosophy of Science and is affiliated with multiple centers at UCI, including the Center for Theoretical Behavioral Science and the Center for Cosmology. His research spans foundational topics in physics, philosophy of science, and epistemology, with notable contributions to the philosophy of physics, quantum field theory, and models of scientific communities.
Weatherall is the author of three books: The Misinformation Age: How False Beliefs Spread (2019, co-authored with Cailin O’Connor), Void: The Strange Physics of Nothing (2016), and The Physics of Wall Street (2013). He also holds editorial roles, including Editor-in-Chief of Philosophy of Science and Editor of the Cambridge Elements in Philosophy of Physics. His work explores topics like the spread of misinformation, theoretical equivalence in physics, and the foundations of general relativity.
Key research interests include the mathematical structure of physical theories, determinism in spacetime models, and the epistemology of scientific networks. His recent publications address issues such as gauge theories, the validity of special relativity, and the role of conformality in scientific communities. Weatherall has held visiting positions at institutions like Stanford University and the Australian National University, and he actively contributes to interdisciplinary research through collaborations and public engagements.
