James Noonan

James Noonan is the Albert E. Kent Professor of Genetics and Professor of Neuroscience at Yale University's School of Medicine. He serves as co-Director of Graduate Studies in Genetics and holds secondary appointments in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and Neuroscience. His research focuses on understanding the genetic basis of human biological uniqueness, particularly through the study of gene regulatory changes in development and evolution.

Education & Career:

• B.S. in Biology and English Literature (SUNY Binghamton, 1997)
• Ph.D. in Genetics (Stanford University, 2004)
• Postdoctoral Fellowship at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (2004–2007)
• Joined Yale as Assistant Professor in 2007, promoted to Professor in 2021

Research Interests:

• Human-specific regulatory elements (HARs and HSGDs) in neurodevelopment and limb evolution
• Epigenomics of human brain evolution
• Functional genomics approaches to study gene regulation in development
• Evolutionary innovations in gene regulatory networks

His lab pioneered the use of humanized mouse models and massively parallel assays to dissect how human-specific genetic changes drive developmental traits, such as limb morphology and cortical expansion.
