Dr James Nissen is a Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield's School of Languages, Arts and Societies, specializing in music, identity, and multiculturalism in international festivals. His work bridges academic research with practical community initiatives, focusing on diasporic music, gender studies, and music education. He holds a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship and has collaborated with organizations like the BBC and Music Action International to promote diversity through music.
Research interests include:
- Music festivals and their socio-political roles
- World music education in schools
- Yiddish and Klezmer music representation
- Gender balance in arts programming
- Transnational music activism
Recent projects include the Mapping Migrant Voices initiative, fostering collaborations between migrant musicians, and leadership roles in the Music, Education and Social Inclusion study group of the International Council for Traditional Music.
His teaching experience spans ethnomusicology, fieldwork, and ensemble performance. He actively performs in pop, jazz, classical, and klezmer/Yiddish styles.
