Professor James Nelson is a faculty member in the Department of Psychological Sciences and Counseling at Valparaiso University. He holds affiliate status in the Department of International Studies and serves as Chairperson of the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Committee. His academic career began at Valparaiso University in 1987, where he has directed programs in clinical mental health counseling and founded the university’s neuroscience interdisciplinary program. He has also held visiting faculty positions at UCLA, Fuller Graduate School of Psychology, Notre Dame, and Zhejiang University in China.

- M.S. and Ph.D., Washington State University (1983, 1987)
His research bridges psychology with neurobiology, philosophy, theology, and anthropology. Current projects include a book on Western mental health concepts and neuroscience applications in art therapy. He emphasizes interdisciplinary dialogue, exemplified by invited talks at Harvard University and the Centre for Muslim-Christian Studies.
