James Myer is an Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at City College of New York (CCNY), part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. He teaches various mathematics courses including Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Calculus across multiple CUNY institutions.
His educational background includes:
- MPhil in mathematics from The CUNY Graduate Center (PhD en route)
- BA/MA in mathematics with a specialization in algebraic geometry from SUNY Potsdam
- BM in Music Business with a concentration in double bass from The Crane School of Music Business and Entrepreneurship
Dr. Myer's research spans interdisciplinary fields at the intersection of mathematics and quantum computing. He focuses on resolution of singularities in algebraic geometry from both detailed 'frog' and broader 'bird' perspectives, and explores the fundamental nature of quantum algorithms. His work bridges theoretical mathematics with practical applications, exemplified by his award-winning mathemusical game combining music theory with modular arithmetic.
His scientific recognition includes the 2015 New York State Business Plan Competition award, being voted among the top three mentors during Fall 2024 NYC HAQ, and winning 2nd place for his CanQr project at The 13th Annual Hackathon for Social Good (2025), which applies quantum computation to discover effective chemotherapy drugs with minimal side effects.
Dr. Myer has mentored numerous undergraduate students on projects ranging from quantum computation to exploring Faltings' Theorem. His teaching experience spans Fordham University, CCNY, and Queens College, where he taught the first undergraduate quantum computing course within CUNY. He completed a residency at X (Google) on the Quantum/AI team during Summer 2020.
Outside academia, James Myer is an active professional musician, performing with several NYC-based artists and ensembles including Motyka, Quiet Car, Footwork, and the City Stars Orchestra, while also leading his own band.
