Dr. James Moran is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), Faculty of Arts. He is also a faculty member on the Steering Committee for UPEI’s Program for Applied Communication, Leadership, and Culture (ACLC), contributing expertise in research, publishing, and communication to enhance student learning.
His research focuses on Canadian history, historiography, and the historical intersections of health, science, and mental health. He has written extensively on 19th-century psychiatric institutions and the societal responses to mental illness in Quebec and Ontario.
His publications include works analyzing the historical relationships between madness and legal systems, psychiatric spaces in transatlantic contexts, and the evolution of mental health policy. These contributions highlight his interdisciplinary approach, bridging history with architectural and legal studies.
Dr. Moran has received the UPEI Hessian Teaching Award, underscoring his excellence in pedagogy. He emphasizes the importance of communication, leadership, and cultural awareness in preparing students for professional and social success.
