James E. Montgomery is the Sir Thomas Adams's Professor of Arabic at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. He holds a position in Trinity Hall and has extensive academic experience, including lectureships at Glasgow, Oslo, and Leeds universities. His research focuses on 9th-century Arabic literature, Islamic theology, and classical poetry translation. Key projects include editing al-Jāḥiẓ's works and translating pre-Islamic poetry.
Education:

Research Interests: Montgomery explores the intellectual and literary legacy of the 3rd/9th century through figures like al-Jāḥiẓ and al-Ashʿarī. He is renowned for his work on classical Arabic poetry, including translations of Abū Nuwās and Ibn al-Muʿtazz. Current projects include editing al-Shantamarī's recension of ʿAntarah ibn Shaddād's poetry.

Advising: Supervising PhD student Gabrielle Russo on Turkic military praise poetry in 9th-century Arabic texts.
