James Montaldi is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Manchester, where he has been since 2001. Previously, he held a Professorship at the University of Nice in France. He earned a BSc in Mathematical Physics from the University of Sussex and a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Liverpool.
His research focuses on dynamical systems with symmetry, particularly Hamiltonian systems, momentum maps, and symplectic/Poisson geometry. Current projects include studying bifurcations at zero momentum and transitions in momentum polytopes. He has held an external position as Project Professor at Kyoto University’s Center for Interdisciplinary Education and Research (2018–2021).
Montaldi’s work contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through advancements in theoretical frameworks for understanding complex systems. He has supervised 13 students and authored over 59 research outputs, including influential articles on point vortices, two-body problems in non-Euclidean geometries, and symmetry-breaking dynamics.
He is affiliated with the Analysis and Dynamical Systems, and Geometry Topology and Mathematical Physics research groups at Manchester, collaborating on topics ranging from contact dynamics to nonholonomic systems.
