James Miller is a Professor of Physics at Boston University, where he has held academic roles since 1979, progressing from Assistant to Associate Professor before his current rank. He is actively involved in cutting-edge particle physics experiments, including serving as co-spokesman for the Mu2e project at Fermilab and leading electronics and simulations for the nEDM experiment at Oak Ridge. His research focuses on probing physics beyond the Standard Model through rare processes such as muon-electron conversion and neutron electric dipole moment measurements.
Education: B.S. (1968), M.S. (1970), and Ph.D. (1975) from Carnegie-Mellon University, advised by Professor Peter Barnes. Postdoctoral work included Caltech (1974-1976) and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (1976-1979).
His research interests emphasize experimental particle physics, particularly in detecting forbidden processes that challenge theoretical models. His recent articles highlight contributions to Mu2e detector systems, experiment design, and superconductivity applications. Scientific recognition includes being a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
Miller’s advising and grants history includes leading major collaborations like Mu2e and nEDM, with his team achieving breakthroughs such as the world’s most precise muon lifetime measurement at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland. He is affiliated with Fermilab, SNS, and has contributed to international experimental teams.
