James Matthew Orr

Dr. J. Matthew "Matt" Orr is the Associate Dean for Continuous Professional Development & Strategic Affairs at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia and Prisma Health Midlands. He also holds the academic rank of Clinical Associate Professor in Family & Preventive Medicine, where he focuses on lifelong learning and performance improvement for clinicians, educators, and scientists. His work emphasizes physician leadership, motivational interviewing, and human-centered communication.

Dr. Orr specializes in Behavioral Health, Motivational Interviewing, and Primary Care Counseling. He leads the Physician Leadership Institute and partners with GME colleagues to enhance faculty development and practitioner well-being. His research interests include system dynamics, performance psychology, mindfulness, and ADHD.

As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for over 25 years, he has directed Behavioral Medicine at the Palmetto Health-USC Family Medicine Residency Program and actively contributes to medical education through the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and the Southern Group on Educational Affairs (SGEA).
