James Mason

Dr James Mason is a Postdoctoral Researcher at The University of Manchester’s Civil Engineering and Management department, specializing in low-carbon shipping solutions and wind-assist technologies. He holds a PhD from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research (2021) and a Master’s in Physics from The University of Manchester (2016). His research focuses on optimizing shipping routes using weather data and AI algorithms to reduce carbon emissions, with a particular emphasis on green shipping corridors and short-term mitigation strategies.

He has contributed to over 14 peer-reviewed publications and 3 datasets, including computational models for voyage optimization using Python and C++. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and sustainable infrastructure. Mason has received the President’s Doctoral Scholar award (2017) and recognition for his Three Minute Thesis presentation (2019). He is actively involved in policy advocacy, contributing to UK emission control consultations and international maritime decarbonization initiatives.
