James Loeffler is Felix Posen Professor of Modern Jewish History at Johns Hopkins University and Director of the Stulman Jewish Studies Program. Research examines Jewish political, legal, and cultural history with focus on human rights, antisemitism, and international law. Award-winning publications analyze connections between Zionism and human rights movements.
Current book projects investigate antisemitism in American civil rights history and the intellectual biography of Raphael Lemkin, architect of the UN Genocide Convention. Research combines archival scholarship with contemporary relevance, including analysis of the 2017 Charlottesville rally.
Publications have received multiple awards including the AHA Rosenberg Prize and AJS Schnitzer Award. Public scholarship appears in The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Washington Post, bringing historical perspective to contemporary debates about antisemitism and human rights.
