James Locke is Professor of Quantitative Plant Development and Research Group Leader at the Sainsbury Laboratory, University of Cambridge. He earned a BSc in Physics from the University of Warwick (2000), completed Mathematics Part III at the University of Cambridge (2001), and obtained a joint PhD in Biology and Theoretical Physics from Warwick under Professors Andrew Millar and Matthew Turner. His postdoctoral training was conducted at Caltech as an EMBO and Human Frontiers Fellow in Michael Elowitz's lab.
Locke's research investigates dynamic gene regulation in plant and microbial systems, focusing on stochastic gene expression, circadian rhythms, cellular decision-making, and phenotypic variability. His lab employs single-cell time-lapse microscopy, synthetic biology, and computational modeling to study noise in gene expression, bistable switches in developmental processes, and spatiotemporal coordination in biological systems.
His work demonstrates consistent focus on systems-level understanding of biological timing mechanisms, stochastic processes in development, and evolutionary adaptations in microbial populations. Research frequently integrates quantitative imaging with mathematical modeling to reveal design principles of regulatory networks.
