James L. Rainey III

James L. Rainey III is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Computer Information Systems at the University of Detroit Mercy, where he has taught for 15 years. He currently works as an IT Specialist for the U.S. Government, leading cybersecurity initiatives and managing IT infrastructure. Rainey has extensive industry experience, including roles at the Department of Defense (1998), GM Tech Center, Comerica Bank, and EDS as a developer and architect.

• Education: BA (1995), MS (1997) in Computer Information Systems from University of Detroit Mercy; Doctor of Management in IT (2010) from Lawrence Technological University

His research focuses on cybersecurity governance, IT risk management, and process improvement in data centers. He co-authored a seminal cybersecurity textbook (Securing an IT Organization) and published articles in refereed IT security journals. Rainey has received a Department of Defense citation (1998) and completed elite government leadership programs in 2011 and 2014.
