James Kit Hon Tsoi is an Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science and Assistant Dean (Innovation) at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Faculty of Dentistry. He also serves as Deputy Director of the Central Research Laboratories. Tsoi holds a BSc in Applied and Analytical Chemistry and a PhD in Dental Materials Science from HKU, along with memberships in the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC), British Computer Society (MBCS), and Fellowship in Advanced HE (FHEA).
His research spans dental materials science, smart manufacturing (CAD/CAM, 3D printing), digital dentistry (AI, data science), and dental education innovation. Notable contributions include over 130 peer-reviewed articles, 10 patents, supervision of 36 MSc and 11 PhD students, and 8 international conference awards since 2012. He leads editorial roles in journals like Dental Materials and holds leadership positions in organizations such as the IADR-Dental Materials Group and ISO/TC 106 (Dentistry).
His work integrates AI-driven solutions with biomaterials, focusing on applications like antimicrobial composites, periodontal regeneration, and precision dental manufacturing. Key innovations include UV-C photon-based zirconia printing and injectable bioadhesives. Tsoi’s academic service includes advancing educational technology and innovation within dental curricula.
His grants and collaborations span biomaterials development, digital dentistry, and oral biomechanics. He leads research teams in the Central Research Laboratories and has pioneered initiatives such as AI-enabled plaque removal mouthguards for elderly patients. Recent studies highlight his focus on sustainable materials and precision medicine in dentistry.
