James Ketelaar is a Professor in History and East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on Japanese national identity, frontiers, religious history, and cultural narratives. He is completing a book titled *Ezo: A History of Japan's Eastern Frontier* (Princeton UP) and initiating a project on love/eros in Japanese historical imagination.
