James J. Ogburn is an Associate Professor of Composition and Theory at the Schwob School of Music, Columbus State University. Previously (2009-2015), he served as Chair of Composition and Theory at Mahidol University College of Music (Thailand) and Principal Researcher for the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, where he was awarded the first Composer-in-Residence position in 2013-14.
He earned a B.M. from Central Washington University (2004) and M.A./Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh (2006, 2009), with additional studies at Krakow's Academy of Music. His composition teachers included Mathew Rosenblum, Eric Moe, and Amy Williams.
Research focuses on contemporary composition, Common Practice period form, and European music analysis. Current projects include composition etudes and analytical studies of central/peripheral European composers, building on his series of essays about compositional approaches.

- Finalist in Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society and ALIA Musica commission competitions
As a conductor specializing in contemporary repertoire, he founded three new-music ensembles and led performances at international festivals including Thailand International Composition Festival and TubaMania. His works have been featured in over two dozen festivals across North America, Europe, and Asia.
