James Hotchkiss is an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow and Ritt Assistant Professor at Columbia University, Department of Mathematics, specializing in algebraic geometry. He previously held a postdoctoral position at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) in Spring 2024 and completed his PhD at the University of Michigan under advisor Alex Perry.
His research focuses on Hodge theory, derived categories, and Brauer groups, with recent works addressing the period-index problem for hyper-Kähler varieties, abelian threefolds, and complex tori. He also investigates Fano schemes and birational invariants.
His publications, often co-authored with colleagues like Davesh Maulik and Giulia Saccà, span journals such as IMRN and Journal of Algebra, highlighting interdisciplinary connections between algebraic geometry, number theory, and mathematical physics. He co-organizes Columbia's algebraic geometry seminar and mentors at the Algebraic Geometry Summer Research Institute.
