Dr. Yanez is a Hedrick Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Department of Mathematics at UCLA, mentored by Joaquín Moraga. His research focuses on Algebraic Geometry, particularly Birational Algebraic Geometry and the Minimal Model Program, with applications to automorphisms, numerical dimensions, and the Kawamata-Morrison conjecture. He holds a PhD from the University of Utah (supervised by Christopher Hacon) and earlier degrees from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (supervised by Giancarlo Urzúa).
His academic journey includes teaching roles at UCLA, where he was honored with the 2025 Liggett Instructor Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award. He has taught courses ranging from Calculus to Analysis and Algebra. Previously, he taught at the University of Utah and served as a Teaching Assistant at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, covering topics like Algebraic Geometry, Linear Algebra, and Trigonometry.
Yanez has an active research portfolio with publications in top journals such as International Mathematics Research Notices and Selecta Mathematica. His work explores complex geometric structures, including Kähler pairs, Fano varieties, and Calabi-Yau pairs, often in collaboration with leading researchers like Joaquín Moraga and Christopher Hacon.
His academic contributions span theoretical advances in birational geometry, endomorphism studies, and the interplay between algebraic structures and geometric properties. Current research emphasizes complexity classifications and moduli spaces in algebraic varieties.
