معرفی
Prof James Hirschfeld is a Professor of Mathematics and Tutorial Fellow in Mathematics at the University of Sussex, affiliated with the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. He has held this position since 1 January 1966. His academic journey includes a BSc (Hons) from the University of Sydney (1958–1961), an MSc from the same institution (1962), and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (1963–1965). He is fluent in Italian, German, and French.
His research interests focus on finite geometry, algebraic geometry over finite fields, coding theory, combinatorial structures, and classical projective geometry. Notable areas include the combinatorics of finite projective spaces, connections between finite geometry and algebraic geometry, and applications in cryptography.
Prof Hirschfeld has secured multiple grants, including funding from the Royal Society, London Mathematical Society, European Union, and EPSRC. His work has led to significant contributions in finite geometry, such as studies on arcs, quadrics, and cubic surfaces in projective spaces, as well as collaborations on quantum states of graphs and Hermitian curves.
His publications span over five decades, with recent works addressing advanced topics like bounds for arcs in finite planes and quantum graph states. Despite no explicitly listed awards, his extensive research and academic service reflect a distinguished career.
