Professor James Henderson Naismith is a Professorial Fellow at Jesus College, University of Oxford, and Director of the Research Complex at Harwell. He holds a DSc from St Andrews University and has held prominent academic roles, including the Bishop Wardlaw Chair in St Andrews. His research focuses on structure-function relationships in enzymes and membrane proteins. He has received numerous awards, including medals from prestigious institutions and fellowships from the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Royal Society, and others. He has taught Biochemistry and Chemistry at the undergraduate level and Structural Biology at the postgraduate level.
Academic Background: BSc (Edinburgh, 1989), PhD in Structural Biochemistry (Manchester, 1992). Postdoctoral work in Dallas (1993-1994), followed by a lectureship at St Andrews (1995). Promoted to Professor in 2001, he moved to Oxford in 2017. He is a 1000 Talent Scholar and former Visiting Professor at Chengdu (2014-2017), and serves on the advisory board of Harbin Institute of Technology’s Life Sciences initiative.
Research: His lab is renowned for studying enzymes and membrane proteins. Collaborations include international roles in China and advisory positions. Awards reflect his contributions to structural biochemistry and biomedical sciences.
