Dr. James Hagberg is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Maryland's School of Public Health. His research focuses on exercise physiology, cardiovascular disease risk factors, and the role of circulating stem cells in vascular health. He has published extensively on topics such as endothelial function, microRNA regulation, and the effects of exercise on metabolic syndrome and aging populations.
Dr. Hagberg holds a PhD from the University of Wisconsin and has been recognized with awards including the University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teacher and the American College of Sports Medicine Citation Award. His work emphasizes translational research, bridging basic science and clinical applications in exercise interventions.
His notable studies include the FIERCE trial targeting breast cancer risk in African-American women and investigations into sex-specific differences in vascular health. He has also contributed to understanding the legacy of pioneering exercise physiologists like John Holloszy.
In addition to his research, Hagberg teaches courses on cardiovascular health and grant writing. His lab explores mechanisms linking exercise to improved cardiometabolic outcomes, with a focus on biomarkers such as microRNAs and inflammatory markers like GlycA.
