James G. Wagner is an Associate Professor at the Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation within the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. His research focuses on the pathophysiological effects of environmental and occupational air pollutants and translational studies of airway injury, with a particular emphasis on cardiopulmonary responses and inflammatory mechanisms.
- Education: BS in Biochemistry (1984), MBA in Logistics Management (1992), PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology (1998), all from Michigan State University.
- Affiliations: Environmental Toxicology Program, Comparative Medicine and Integrative Biology Graduate Program, and MSU AgBioResearch.
Dr. Wagner’s work integrates inhalation toxicology with autoimmune disease research, using advanced techniques like flow cytometry, RT-PCR, and computer-assisted morphometry to study pollutant-induced pathology in animal models. His recent publications highlight omega-3 fatty acids as protective agents against silica-triggered autoimmunity and LPS-induced glomerulonephritis.
Current investigations include:
- Dietary modulation of cardiopulmonary responses to air pollutants
- Immune responses to engineered nanomaterials
- Asthma/allergy linked to agricultural dusts
Funding from the National Institutes of Health, RIVM (Dutch National Institute for Public Health), and private industries supports his research. He serves on editorial boards (Inhalation Toxicology, Particle and Fibre Toxicology) and peer-review panels for federal health agencies.
