James G. Basker is the Richard Gilder Professor of Literary History at Barnard College, Columbia University, where he has taught since 1987. He concurrently serves as President of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and founder of Oxbridge Academic Programs. His academic career also includes teaching at Harvard University and Columbia’s graduate school since 1990.

His research focuses on eighteenth-century Anglo-American history and literature, with specialties in slavery and abolition, Samuel Johnson’s intellectual legacy, and women writers. He has published extensively on these topics, including edited volumes like American Antislavery Writings and Amazing Grace. Current projects include a book on Johnson, James Boswell, and slavery, and an anthology of African American writings (1760–1826).

Oxbridge Academic Programs, founded by Basker, has hosted summer schools in Oxford, Cambridge, and Paris for over 25 years. His editorial work includes roles at The Age of Johnson journal.
