James Freeland

James Freeland is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Studies at Purdue University, where he has served since 2010. He represents Purdue on the University Placement Team, collaborating with Indiana University, Ball State University, and Indiana State University to assist Indiana school boards in selecting superintendents. Additionally, he consults for the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents.

Freeland’s research focuses on the challenges faced by small and rural school districts, particularly regarding consolidation and collaboration efforts to improve student outcomes while reducing costs. His work with the Purdue Educational Leadership Initiative for Small and Rural Schools (PELISARS) explores factors driving administrative changes in Indiana counties.

He teaches graduate-level courses in educational administration, including Foundations of Educational Administration, Supervision of Instruction, and Transformational Leadership, with internships spanning building-level, district-level, and community collaboration projects.
