James F. Selwa, MD, MBA, FAANEM, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at Wayne State University School of Medicine, where he has served since 1991. He holds board certification in Clinical Neurophysiology and has held key leadership roles including Director of the Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Program (1995–2002) and Medical Director of the Electromyography Laboratory at Detroit Medical Center (1993–2002). Dr. Selwa also pioneered healthcare IT initiatives, leading the implementation of Detroit Medical Center's Clinical Information System (1997–2004).
His educational background includes a BS from the University of Michigan's Residential College (1978), an MBA from Michigan's Graduate School of Business (1980), and an MD from the University of Michigan School of Medicine (1985). He completed residency in Neurology at Henry Ford Hospital (1986–1989) and a Neuromuscular Fellowship at University of Michigan Hospitals (1989–1990).
Dr. Selwa's research focuses on neuromuscular diagnostics and disorders, with expertise in:
- Electromyography and single fiber techniques
- Peripheral nerve pathologies (neuropathies, radiculopathies)
- Neuromuscular junction diseases like Myasthenia Gravis
- Nerve injury mechanisms
He received the FAANEM award for contributions to neuromuscular medicine.
Dr. Selwa actively supervises neurology residents in clinical training and previously directed fellowship programs. He maintains an active clinical practice specializing in EMG diagnostics.
